Peter Edelmann
Baritone PETER EDELMANN began his musical studies with his father, renowned opera basso Otto Edelmann, and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in his hometown of Vienna, Austria, where he graduated summa cum laude.
He made his debut at the Theater Koblenz, Germany as the Herrufer in “Lohengrin”. In 1989 he won First Prize, the Mozart Prize in addition to seven special prizes at the Belvedere Competition in Vienna. In 1990 he became a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. His debut was Figaro in “Il barbiere di Siviglia”.
In 2001 he returned to Vienna and worked as a freelance singer. Since then he has enlarged his repertoire to over 75 roles, including: Papageno, Guglielmo, Don Alfonso, Figaro, Conte, Wolfram, Melot, Faninal, Orest (Elektra), Marcello, Posa, Malatesta, Danilo, Eisenstein, Dr. Falke, Valentin, Mercutio, Onegin, Escamillo, Albert, Zar Peter I., Herr Fluth (Merry Wives of Windsor), Gyges (König Kandaules), and König (Die Kluge).
He has appeared in opera and concert in Dresden, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Hamburg, Köln, Munich, Zürich, Stockholm, Liège, Bruxelles, Antwerp, Paris, Toulon, Nancy, Toulouse, Genève, Bern, Dublin, Istanbul, Athens, Tel Aviv, Moscow, Belgrade, Praha, Las Palmas, Madrid, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Naples, Venice, Rome, Washington DC, Seattle, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orlando, New York, Boston, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Bejing, Shanghai, Macau, Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kanazawa, as well as at the Staatsoper Wien, Volksoper Wien, and Opernhaus Graz.
He has worked with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Franz Welser-Möst, Lawrence Foster, Stefan Soltesz, Heinrich Hollreiser, Jiri Kout, Jaques Delacote, Frederic Chaslin, Alain Gingale, Claude Schnitzler, Pinchas Steinberg, John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, Friedemann Layer, Alfred Eschwé, Rudolf Bibl, Peter Guth, Guido Mancusi, Niels Muus, Rudolf Nurejev, Eliahu Inbal, Gabriele Ferro, Bruno Weil, Yuri Bashmet, and Günther Neuhold.
He sang under the direction of Götz Friedrich, Günther Krämer, Willi Decker, David Pountney, Jean-Claude Berutti, Jean-Louis Martinotty, Klaus Michael Grüber, Hellmuth Matiasek, Lotfi Mansouri, Phillip Himmelmann, Mario Pontiggia, Robert Herzl, Carlos Wagner, and Calixto Bieito.
Besides his operatic career he appears regulary in concerts, especially “Lieder Recitals”, around the world, and has recorded numerous CDs and DVDs. Since 1990 he has appeared regulary at the Newport Music Festival in Rhode Island, USA.
In 2005 he founded with his wife, Sylvia Saavedra Edelmann, the
OTTO EDELMANN SOCIETY (OES). This society helps young singers, who have finished their studies, to receive final preparation for auditions and provides career guidance. It has already organized over 15 concerts for young singers. Annually an “Audition Workshop” of the OES takes place in Vienna, where singers from all over the world participate.
Performance highlights:
- Peter Edelmann gave his voice to Gaston in the German version of the famous Disney Picture “The Beauty and the Beast”.
- He sang in performances of “Tannhäuser” the role of Wolfram in the famous production of Götz Friedrich and under Christian Thielemann at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
- He appeared at a Gala Performance of the Ballet from Maurice Bejart “Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen” from Gustav Mahler under the baton of world famous ballet star Rudolf Nurejev in Berlin.
- He sang the role of Orest at the Teatro San Carlo Napoli and at the Teatro la Fenice Venice in Elektra by Richard Strauss in the famous production of Klaus Michael Grüber in the setting by Anselm Kiefer.
- At the famous Teatro Colon Buenos Aires he sang the role of Gyges in the superb opera “Der König Kandaules” by Alexander Zemlinsky under Günther Neuhold.
- He appeared in a concert version of “Die Fledermaus” at the Pushkin Museum Moscow under the baton of world famous viola-player Yuri Bashmet.
- He sang and hosted a “New Years Gala” at the beautiful and impressing Disney Music Hall in downtown Los Angeles with music from Johann Strauss and Franz Lehar.
- He introduced and sang in a Live Broadcast Performance for TV of Strauss´s “Die Fledermaus” at the Washington Opera.
- At the Deutsche Oper Berlin he appeared beside the world famous tenor Alfredo Kraus in a concert performance of “Werther” by Jules Massenet.
